FedRAMP Rev5 and 20x: what changes in 2026

The transition changes how providers demonstrate security. Plan around your certification type, application status and current obligations.

At a glance

  • 20x changes the assurance approach; it is not a new NIST control revision.
  • New applicants and existing certified services face different decisions.
  • FedRAMP certification supports a separate agency authorization decision.
  • Budget transition work around the service boundary and evidence your team can maintain.

Start with the terms

Checked against official FedRAMP sources on October 15, 2026. Rev5 is a certification type using tailored NIST SP 800-53 Revision 5 controls. FedRAMP 20x is a different certification type, emphasizing demonstrated security outcomes through Key Security Indicators. Calling 20x “Rev6” would confuse a program change with a NIST publication revision.

A control baseline specifies safeguards. A certification type determines the assurance approach. The Program path provides certification directly through FedRAMP; the Agency path involves an agency sponsor. Current 20x certifications use the Program path. Rev5 generally uses the Agency path, with limited exceptions.

New applicants need a realistic route

FedRAMP’s October 8 update says it will stop processing legacy Rev5 certification applications on June 11, 2027. It advises providers without substantial Rev5 progress and a guaranteed sponsor to pivot to 20x. Treat that as a delivery constraint: a project kickoff, completed assessment and accepted application are different milestones.

Before committing, confirm the available certification class, hosting eligibility, sponsor position and review schedule. The current type guidance still identifies Rev5 as the available option for services running their own infrastructure or requiring Class D; FedRAMP describes wider 20x coverage as future work.

Existing certifications still need active maintenance

Existing Rev5 services must continue meeting applicable requirements while preparing for transition. The October 8 update expects fuller transition paths and timelines by the end of fiscal year 2027. It does not announce automatic cancellation of all existing Rev5 certifications on the new-application cutoff.

December 31, 2028 is also easy to misread: FedRAMP says the practices in its Consolidated Rules for 2026 expire no later than that date. This is not a guarantee that an individual Rev5 certification remains valid until then. Track the ruleset-specific adoption dates and future program updates.

Keep the agency decision visible

FedRAMP certification concerns a cloud service offering. The agency still authorizes its information system and accepts risk for its particular use, configuration and integrations. A reusable provider package supports that decision; it does not grant every agency an Authorization to Operate (ATO).

For a buying team, ask for the exact service boundary, current certification status and customer responsibilities. For a provider, keep those answers consistent across engineering, assurance and sales.

Put it into practice

  1. Record the service boundary, certification type, class and application status.
  2. Assign an owner to each applicable transition requirement.
  3. Review the official guidance before making a customer commitment.
  4. Reconcile the delivery plan with engineering and assessment capacity.

For the executive team

Fund the route your service can actually complete, while preserving current obligations and a credible evidence record.
